Altria

Join Modern Richmond on November 6th for a tour of Altria’s Corporate Headquarters from 5:30p-7:30p

This International Style building, completed in 1958, was designed by Gordon Bunshaft of Skidmore, Owens and Merrill as the Corporate Offices of Reynold’s Metals Company. Bunshaft included modern day details in his design such as air conditioning, large windows, sun louvers and extended areas of green space. To pay homage to Reynold’s Metals, Bunshaft incorporated the use of aluminum into building exterior and interior materials. The total weight of aluminum used in the building is estimated to be over one million pounds and includes the glass and aluminum curtain wall, a cantilevered aluminum canopy and even threads in the carpet that was installed when the building opened.

The property sits on 38 acre site. Charles F. Gillette, provided the landscape design for the property, which was the largest commission he had received in his career. With a budget of $130,000 he designed a landscaped entrance with a large reflecting pool accentuated by trees, outside seating areas which includes square gridded areas with planting of trees and seasonal flowers as well as aluminum umbrellas for shading on the back terrace.

In 2016, Altria looked at acquiring the property to make it the home of their international headquarters. They enlisted the help of the architectural and design firm BHDP, to masterplan their corporate campuses into one location in Richmond. In addition to the renovation of the existing space, BHDP designed a large addition to the building of 170,000 square feet which increased the total square footage to 400,000 SF and included a corporate conference center that was designed with SMBW.
