Situated on the corner of Thompson and Floyd Avenue, is this distinct modern, round building that stands out among all of the traditional architecture in the area. Designed by the DC Architecture Firm Deigert & Yerkes in 1954 as a medical building for Dr. William Higgins Jr., this building at 3540 Floyd Avenue features stacked ornamental concrete block around a windowless facade, with handsome, large, inset wooden doors, and beautiful landscaping. The back of the building opens up with continuous windows, separated by brick, the windows focus on a large, enclosed outdoor gathering space for the building. The interior stays true to the circular form with several offices, skylights, wood paneling and at one time a small pool in the waiting area.
This 2700 square-foot building operated until 2015 as a medical office it was then that Rick Hood, the former owner of Ellwood Thompson’s Market, purchased the building to make it the headquarters for Ellwood Thompson’s. Hood, an architect himself, enlisted his design team for the renovation which included Walter Parks Architects @walterparksarchitects, Four Winds Design as the landscape designer, Sadler&Whitehead @sadlerandwhitehead as the Preservation Consultant and J.A.Heisler Construction as the General Contractor. The design team kept many of the original details of the interior and exterior of the building. The interior design features original drawings by Deigert and Yerkes as artwork in the space as well as a new mural created by Richmond artist Emily Herr.
